For the last couple of years since I’ve got involved in VR and AR industries, people kept asking me what is the difference between AR/VR? And now after this technology has become attached to acronyms like XR and MR, it was a bit confusing. What I will try to do in this article is doing my best to simplify things down to clarify what is the meaning of each acronym. What’s really behind each of those abbreviations?
It’s important to understand that those technologies come from different places and seek to do different things. Even though they use similar software and technologies, like 3D objects and AI. So let’s have a close look at the concepts and definitions hiding under those acronyms.
What is virtual reality VR?
Virtual Reality (VR) is an immersive experience try to give you the feeling that you’re in another world without being physically there, by building an artificial environment that seeks to insert stimuli to your senses synthetically, In another meaning VR can artificially stimulate the human senses “sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.” with virtual factors.
It comes as no surprise if I say that VR was an idea in most science fiction movies and books but the surprise is the first VR machine or application invented was in 1957!
Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you the Sensorama the first interactive film experience machine allowed the viewer to watch a movie that would use all of his/her senses. The sensorama machine is considered one of the earliest virtual reality VR systems.
The VR system has been in existence before longer than most people know.
Back to the present, we’re now seeing a more practical application in many industries like medical, real estate, education and definitely the gaming industry.
VR is well established and fast-growing technology. It’s a new reality.
The VR market is still expanding, we are still excited about this trend and expect further progress in the near future, However the technology needs to find a better way of interaction with the digital world and to make the experience of the user more immersive, the headset should be with higher resolution, lower motion-to-photon latency “less lag”, and with bigger field to view.
What is Augmented reality AR?
Whereas VR is building an artificial environment the user can interact with, the AR is to bring a digital element to the real world by using the smartphone camera, That means the user will still be in contact with the real world through devices like AR headsets, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Without a doubt, the most popular application of AR was pokemon Go and Snapchat lenses.
Augmented Reality AR can be applied in many industries because the possibilities of AR are limited only by the capabilities of the user digital devices. To recognize the AR abilities it starts from the principle of adding overlays “effect” to the image on the smartphone camera.
Apple and Google have been keeping up with AR technology, introducing Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore which are considered the raw material for most AR app developers. Despite the presence of some impressive apps for several environments still, applications based on haven’t become prevalent.
What’s The Mixed reality MR
Sometimes it is called Hybrid reality, Now after we understand the difference between VR and AR.
MR virtual content is not only overlaid in the real environment like AR but the user can also interact with that environment.
Mixed Reality is considered an advanced type of Augmented reality because in MR the user can not only see the virtual object in the real world-like AR- but these objects can also interact with the real world which gives the user an immersive, amazing and interactive experience.

As you can see it’s quite complex and expensive technology, but it quickly gains the audience’s attention, it’s a part of the next era of marketing “Experiential marketing”, These technologies will allow brands and advertisers to be alive. The virtual world is an incredible experience and can provoke strong emotions to the prospect. If you know how to give these emotions to your audience, you can increase the recognition of your brand. Raising up the required affection of your audience will massively increase your brand recognition.
